This morning, the “Make Your Own Institute” session focused on how Common Core standards demanded a different level of understanding. It is imperative to make sure teachers have the content, as well as the recognition of how knowledge grows within students. The question was posed: what do effectively trained teachers and leaders look like?
Effective teachers are encouraging, know when to get out of the way and let students discover for themselves, and are willing to grow with the students. Further, they can discover and analyze students’ weaknesses and are able to teach from that place, as well as integrate performance tasks within the class structure. Lastly, they don’t re-write the standards – they stay on target and focus on the process and not just the product.
